Comprehension Pie

For crust collect scales
from the eyes of the blind
enough to fill a cup.

Mix with crumbled petals
of the red rose and chrysanthemum,
with butter from a young mother's milk,
and the egg of a dying hen.

For filling shred a dictionary,
unabridged if possible.
Sprinkle with pickled nerve endings
and leave out in a light summer rain

Till the scraps of language are soggy
the fibers soaked and loosened--
easily pulled apart.

Drizzle with a syrup made of honey,
the sweat of an aged plow horse,
and the juice of a single pomegranate.

Then lie with the pie in a farmhouse bed
for an afternoon while the dogs run free.
Split with a friend--serves two.
(Best with wine and brie.)
